Self Portrait

Been a while since I've done a self portrait for fun. Infact, this piece is the most fun I've had with art in a long while.

slight rigging tutorial

Okay, I'm not going to lie, this tutorial is a bit of a stretch, but I did legitimately learn a few things from it. I took the tutorial on advanced character rigging in maya. Basically the nurbs planes in the picture above are what would be the defacto spinal cord  for the model allowing it to twist and bend more organically then a normal maya rig. This is done  by taking a nurbs plane and making certain attachable points on one plane that would attach the the model, and then attach a bendable cv line to the other then use blend shapes to make the main plane curve to the shape and twist the 'spine'.

group tutorial

this is based off of the tutorial that klein has set up on the tigeranimation website for low poly modeling, i didnt go far into the tutorial but it taught me alot about following a curve of motion when modeling any model let alone a low poly model. Also i got an introduction to the merge to vertex tool (which is now one of my favs!).

hair

For this tutorial i was using lesson 27 and 28 of digital tutor's

Creating Stylized Males in Maya

Using this tutorial i found a way to make hair in layers without using fur. This process can be highly helpful for creating realistic (or semi realistic) hair without having to use the notorious fur that murders your render time. The process is to make a nurbs plane and to shape it how you want to according to the style of hair that you want, then to take the texture node and attach a picture of hair to the color setting, and finally attach an alpha channel with edges on it to the transparency setting.
I'm really liking the results im having with the hair

Im testing out new rigging methods, (or at least methods that are new to me) such as inserting a mid joint in the middle of the radius and ulna to allow a more realistic twist and arm bend. Also I'm messing around with parenting to get the armor moving how i want it to.
